THE ALCHEMIST – BOOK REVIEW

“The Alchemist” is a masterpiece from PAULO COELHO and is something way more than just “a book”. I would rather call it a magic wand that can work wonders on all its readers. Let’s see why…

THE ALCHEMIST” is a story of an Andalusian shepherd named Santiago from Spain. He always had a longing to travel around the world and was not interested in school. After a few initial years of schooling, he tells his father about his love for traveling and becomes a shepherd. While taking care of his sheep, one night he dreams of a young boy who tells him of the existence of treasure in Egyptian pyramids and this dream was recurrent and seemed to be different from the regular dreams. He decides to go to a Romani fortune-teller in the town Tarifa, to find the truth in his dream where he meets an old king who ruled Salem namely Melchizedek. This man appeared to people who wanted to live their legend. He told him about the Soul of the world and his destiny which was finding the treasure. He motivated him by saying that “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it.” which is the CORE THEME of the book.

Santiago sells his sheep for money to travel to Egypt and gets stolen. He works in a crystal shop for some time to gather enough money for his travel. He joins a caravan to Al-Fayoum oasis in the desert and meets an Englishman who was going to the oasis to meet a learned Alchemist who was 200 years old.

At the oasis, he falls in love with a desert girl named Fatima and is quite satisfied thinking that she was the treasure destiny had to give him. He learns from her that love doesn’t get in way of fulfilling one’s dreams and if it does then it not true love. She motivates him to pursue his dream and promises to wait for him until he returns.

He next meets the 200-year-old Alchemist for whom the Englishman had come to the oasis and from him, he learns to listen to his heart and proves to be the true disciple of the Alchemist.

“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” This line from the book is all the motivation one needs to get started on the journey to pursue one’s dreams!

The most amazing thing about this book is the fact that despite being written around 33 years ago, it holds perfect relevance to this day!!

The Alchemist is a wonderful read and has the power to take its readers on a journey of self-discovery along with the protagonist and the feeling is truly rewarding! It also makes a great feel-good read in case you are looking for light-hearted literature.

This book was one of the first books I ever read and it continues to have its captivating effect on me to this day. It’s surreal how fluently the author conveys his message while not letting go of the simplicity of his language. Very rarely do we find books that can leave indelible impressions on our minds and this work is certainly one of them!

I feel that every character of the book is equally important in its own way and each of them have a very valuable message to convey to all its readers making it a perfect book to read for all age groups because of its enchanting literature and especially to the young generation because of its messages which are very practical and can motivate them to pursue their dreams.

Finally, here are my top 3 takeaways from the book:

  1. When we want to achieve something, the entire universe conspires to help us achieve it!
  2. Only the fear of failure and nothing else can really stop us from achieving our dreams.
  3. Only that, which gives us the strength to keep going and pursue our dreams is true love.

But.. did Santiago reach the pyramids? Could he find the treasure? Did he return to Fatima?  Grab the book to get your questions answered!!!

And that brings us to the end of this week’s article. I hope you liked it.

Thank you so much for reading through it and I’ll see you next Sunday with another blog post.

Until then…Toodles!!
